Sarawak Pua Kumbu

Warp Ikat. “Pua Kumbu”( Man’s blanket) in  two panels. Sarawak, Borneo. Tribal grouping is Iban Dayak. The motif is rhomboids enclosing zoomorphic figures in cream on brick red. Serpent overall pattern, enriched with animal motifs. Squid-like figure actually represents headless man, other motif main represents scorpion. Top row of spiders. Borders in white, dark brown, brick red and faded yellow. Only the yellow pin stripes were done in commercial thread, the rest is all hand spun cotton. circa 1930. 1.83 metres x 1 metre. Excellent unfaded condition. $1,750.00
