Betel nuts are widely used in many countries in Asia and Africa for ceremonial and social occasions and are a stimulant. Betel has been used for over 2,000 years and it is estimated that today over 600 million people chew betel nuts. It is the 4th most popularly used stimulant after tobacco, alcohol and caffeine.
A betel nut is the seed of the Areca palm. Pieces of betel nut are covered with dry lime and wrapped in betel nut leaves. When chewed it turns the mouth red. Continued use will turn the teeth red or even black.
